Meet Your Therapist
Laura Hockenberry,
MA LLP, LPC
I believe in therapy because I have lived it myself. I began my own clinical work in my mid-twenties and have continued for over two decades. I grew up in New Jersey, moved to Michigan for college, and built a life and career here—first working in the foster care system with children and adolescents. Those early years shaped my understanding of attachment, development, and how unmet childhood needs follow us into adulthood.
Today, I support adults navigating the deeper layers of their emotional world—helping them make sense of their past, find clarity in the present, and move toward healing with intention and courage.
Insight-Focused.
Deeply Reflective.
Rooted in Experience.
My greatest strength as a therapist is that I have done the work myself. I’ve spent more than 20 years in my own therapy—continuing to explore my thoughts, fears, patterns, and unconscious beliefs so that they do not interfere with your treatment. Many therapists never experience their own therapeutic process. I believe it is essential.
My approach combines:
Years of personal therapy and self-reflection
Clinical training and formal education
Real-life experiences working with individuals across the lifespan
A commitment to addressing countertransference and staying grounded

Areas of Focus
I find people and their life experiences endlessly fascinating—always worth exploring with curiosity, gentleness, and honesty. There is always something new to uncover and understand. I work with individuals seeking support for a wide range of experiences, including:
Childhood trauma, emotional abuse, or sexual abuse
Being raised by narcissistic or emotionally immature parents
Cancer diagnosis, chronic illness, or life-threatening conditions
Adoption-related identity and understanding
Divorce transitions and co-parenting challenges
Relationship struggles, attachment wounds, and self-worth
The desire to break patterns, grow, and create a more aligned life
Who I Work Best With
If you are searching for a therapist who will partner with you in understanding your story—not just managing symptoms—I would be honored to walk alongside you.
I am best positioned to support individuals who are:
Ready to look beneath the surface
Open to discovery, insight, and emotional exploration
Willing to challenge old patterns and beliefs
Navigating relationships, parenting, or major life transitions
Healing childhood wounds that continue to shape adult life
Seeking long-term growth rather than short-term symptom reduction
